When the Story Is Silent: Dinah and the Grace of Unanswered Questions

Some stories in Scripture don’t explain themselves.
Dinah’s story in Genesis 34 is one of them. She appears briefly, and then the narrative moves forward without ever recording her words or her response. Everything that happens is told through the actions of others, leaving readers to sit with a silence that feels uncomfortable and unfinished.
It’s tempting to rush past passages like this. We prefer clarity. We want closure. But Scripture doesn’t always offer those things—and that doesn’t mean God is absent from the story.
Dinah’s silence reminds us that not every experience comes with language. Some moments in life leave us without the words to explain what happened or how it changed us. Yet those moments still matter. They are still seen by God, even when they aren’t fully named on the page.
Genesis 34 ends without resolution, and that alone teaches us something important: God does not force healing into a tidy conclusion. Grace often looks like patience—allowing time, space, and presence to do their quiet work.
As we begin a new year with 12 Cups of Grace, January invites us to slow down and sit with Scripture that feels unresolved. To trust that even in the silence, God is near—holding stories that are still unfolding.

We’ll be sitting with Dinah’s story together—slowly, thoughtfully, and with grace.
